Kalimantan (Borneo)

Overview
Kalimantan is the Indonesian region on the island of Borneo. Indonesian Kalimantan is divided into five provinces: West, Central, South, East, and North Kalimantan. Borneo itself is the third-largest island in the world and is shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
What Kalimantan is best for
- Borneo is famous for “spectacular wildlife,” and Kalimantan is a classic place to see it especially on river-and-jungle trips like Tanjung Puting National Park, which is well known for orangutan conservation.
- A signature Kalimantan experience is exploring waterways and rainforest edges (often as part of multi-day park trips), combining wildlife viewing with quiet, off-the-beaten-path scenery.
- The Derawan Archipelago (Derawan, Maratua, Sangalaki, Kakaban, etc.) is popular for diving/snorkeling, including turtles, manta rays, and Kakaban’s jellyfish lake.
- Kalimantan is also known for unique local traditions like floating markets (notably in South Kalimantan) and indigenous cultural heritage (often associated with Dayak communities and longhouse traditions).
