Sulawesi

Overview
Sulawesi (also known as Celebes) is a large Indonesian island east of Borneo, famous for its distinct “K-shaped” shape made up of long peninsulas. Administratively it’s divided into 6 provinces (North, Gorontalo, Central, West, South, Southeast Sulawesi).
What Sulawesi is best for
- Bunaken (Manado, North Sulawesi): one of Indonesia’s most famous marine areas, promoted for rich reefs and diving spots around Bunaken and nearby islands.
- Wakatobi (Southeast Sulawesi): widely known as a top-tier dive region with pristine reefs, wall dives, and abundant marine life. (Also, very popular with divers: Lembeh Strait for “muck”/macro diving.)
- Tana Toraja (South Sulawesi): famous for dramatic landscapes, tongkonan traditional houses, and well-known ceremonial traditions/ritual culture highlighted by Indonesia’s official tourism site.
- Togean (Togian) Islands (Central Sulawesi / Tomini Bay): known for laid-back island hopping, reefs, and “far from the crowds” vibes often cited as a major draw of Sulawesi.
